Why I love characters so much

Well, if you've been reading this blog for any amount of time, you might have heard that I love characters a lot. Really, they're almost more interesting then the plot is to me. Characters are a really big part of my book, I love thinking of their backgrounds and who they're related to and who they're parents are, so much so that I'd rather do that then write sometimes. But why do I love characters so much?

I love characters because they tell me everything. They become something that means something else. No, they aren't real, but they seem like it. They can take off and zoom into a story of their own, and there can be instant connections with them. I'm fascinated with people and with what makes them tick and what they like and dislike, the same goes with characters.

When writing, the author always knows things about the character that the readers will never know, and the readers imagine things about the characters that the author will never know. Each character is a different person for everyone who reads it.

There are certain characters that I love more then others, like the BBC and the mentor and others, but there are some that surprise me. When I was younger I would immediately take a liking to whichever girl came in first, and I couldn't understand why my mom and sister would like characters that weren't girls. Now I get it.

What defines a character isn't they're part in the book, how they look, how old they are or if they're male of female. It's what they do, how they do it and the magic that they bring to the book. It's spectacular if you really think about it. I would be willing to read a book that I thought had the dumbest plot ever if I knew I would love the characters.

Then again, the characters also build the plot, they make it happen. The characters are the actors, the writer is the director, the notebook, pen, computer and coffee that you have while writing are the set. It's all like one big movie, and a movie without actors isn't really a movie, now is it? Even in silent cartoons, there are still actors, they're just Minnie and Micky instead of Cruz and Clooney.

Characters make everything happen to me, and that's why I love them so much. I love them because of who they are and what they do. I love them because of the exact thing that they say which makes me read the scene over and over again. Seriously, I've read one part in Harry Potter about five times and one other part in Princess Academy several times too.

I love characters. Characters might just be what keeps me writing, because my books would be pretty dull without them. Really, I don't have wonderful plots. That's why I love characters so much.

  1. Same here. I don't know HOW MANY character bios I've written, and could ALWAYS write more!
