I know that most of the time when I'm writing, I write a 'main' book. That would be the book that I work on the most, the book that I want to get finished and the book that I am the most excited about in some cases. All the other books are just for fun writing. I think it's important that we don't focus on every book we're writing, because we'd never finish any. At least I wouldn't. But sometimes you feel like there's nothing else you can do with your main book then write, right? Actually, there are some very important things that you can do for your book, and this post will introduce several.
The first I will talk about is that place that your book takes place. Where is it? Is it a fantasy world? If so, is it based on a real country? Is it a historical place like Plymouth? Is it a made up town in a real city/state/country? It's important to write those down on paper, or in your word document as the case may be. You should know if it's a small place, a large place, what's in it and how many people are in it. I suggest writing all of that down to because it might be important later. Remember, you're writing the book, so you can decide how many people are in the town and stuff like that. I made a map of my town, Emory, and it was a lot of fun. I simply taped two pieces of paper together and went crazy.
Next, another very important thing is knowing your characters history. I think it's a lot of fun to think of one of the less important characters and think, where was he from? Where was he born? How did he end up here? You don't have to write it down, but it's a good thing to think about.
Another thing that I have done is a lot of fun, especially if you like fashion. I joined Polyvore and I have made some outfits that look like something that my characters would wear. They're lots of fun to do and they don't take all that much time. If that's not really your thing it's fine, and if you'd rather just draw it out that's fine too.
You already know about casting actors for your parts in books, I've told you about that here, so I don't think it's necessary to get into it.
Make sure you know what season your book is set in, because it's important that you know the weather. I like writing about the weather because there as so many adjectives for them. For spring it could be bright, vibrant, sunny, green, picturesque etc. etc. For summer you could say it's warm, boiling, cool, relaxing.... You get the point.
So that's all, if you have any other ideas for it, then please feel free to comment and say what they are! Also, did you do any of these after reading the post? I love to hear about it!
