You look over at your computer screen, your hands are buried in your hair, you can feel a crushing headache coming on to. You need something to drink, you need it fast. You can feel the TV calling to you, and your favorite book, but now is the time to write. But all you can do is look at the screen in utter frustration, it's blank.
I know that a similar situation has happened to everyone who has gotten passed the honeymoon phase of writing. That is the time when you're so thrilled about it, all you can do is write and you have endless ideas, about the first year. But what can we do about it? I know there are a lot of methods out there, and some good ones written by our dear contributor, Izori, but we need something fast. So here are by suggestions.
1. Watch a movie that involves something similar to the situation in your book. Example: If you are writing about time travel and fantasy, watch Prince of Persia (extremely good movie by the way.)
2. Just plow through, don't think of anything that has to do with your storyline, just add a scene of whatever. Look around and see the coffee on the counter and write about the characters going to coffee.
3. DON'T look anywhere else on the internet. I tend to do this, I look up actors and stuff about the location in my book, hospital rules, and all that jazz. But it just keeps me from writing, so I need to sit down, not look at anything else (maybe not listen to music *gasp*!) and write!!
4. Walk away, this works if you have a little more time. Walk away for a hour at least, have something nice to drink, don't think of anything but your book, just as long as your not looking at the darn screen.
5. Write by a window. Looking at the screen and staring at the keyboard is awful, it just makes everything worse. When you pause in your writing, look out a window for am moment and then go back to it.
So there are five tips for writer's block. Have fun with them, I use number 3 and 5 the most. These really are more tips for people who have been writing a bit longer, but new writer's can get writer's block too, so these should be good for everyone.
