Chapter Names

So, I know that you've all read a variety of chapter books out there. I know that you've seen the spot on a page where it says: I or Chapter 1 or the name of the chapter or The First Chapter, there are numerous ways that people have done this, but which one is right? The answer is, none. Just because a chapter is called 'In Which We Discover Some Very Interesting Things That Will Later Affect the Course of This Book That Includes a Cat' doesn't meant that it's any better then one called 'Chapter 1'. For your book, you can call the chapter whatever.

One way to go is naming the chapters: you can toy around with this a lot. You can name it something with one word, like 'hat', or you can call it something really long. The name of the chapter shouldn't give away all that happens in the chapter. I think longer chapter titles may be better for books that aren't as dramatic, and shorter ones for dramatic books. But that's just me (or is it?).

Another way to go is not naming chapters: (I know you're saying 'duh iGirl!' But hang in there). I think that not naming chapters is far easier. Besides which you can add a short poem or a bible verse or a tidbit of a song like in Princess Academy by Shannon Hale, but not have it be the chapter name.

The choice is yours, but this is a place where the chapter naming ideas are collected for you to draw from. Enjoy.

  1. I ussualy never name my chapters; I usually just call the chapter "One", "Two," etc. I'm not sure why... :/
