The Use of Grammar Part 1

Everyone but true and dedicated grammar nuts have, at some point, probably questioned the use of grammar. I mean, come on! There are rules even for what words we put next to each other? For whether or not there's a little dot at the end of a sentence? What kind of restriction is that?

I am a grammar nut. And I am here to tell you how grammar is so useful to writers.

#1. Grammar ensures clear communication. We have sentences that are so complex that we need clarification. Without grammar, we would only be able to go to a certain level of complexity in our sentences until people would have difficulty understanding us. As writers, we depend on sentence complexity to add interest--if every sentence had the same structure, it would be extremely boring. Without grammar, writers would have to choose between being boring versus being confusing.

To further illustrate my point, let me give you an example.

Lilly fastened the rope to the tree with trembling hands, pulling the knot securely. Glancing over her shoulder, she nodded at Sophia.

Sophia took a deep breath. "Ready?" she called down the cliff.

A faint answer came echoing back. "Ready!"

Now, I'm going to take out the proper punctuation and lump it into one paragraph.

lilly fastened the rope to the tree with trembling hands pulling the knot securely glancing over her shoulder she nodded at sophia sophia took a deep breath ready she called down the cliff a faint answer came echoing back ready

Wasn't that a lot harder to understand when I took out the punctuation?

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Yours without wax,

Izori
