Hello Writerly Friends!
Well this is a strange topic, but it's kind of interesting that we haven't really touched on it before. After all, blogging is a form of writing.
Think of your favorite blogs...what do they have? Pictures? Lots of followers? Giveaways? While those things can add up to a good blog, good writing is essential as well.
Some bloggers choose to write in all lowercase letters (with a few exceptions), some bloggers list things a lot, some bloggers give lengthy paragraphs. Whatever your style is, there are always ways to make your writing interesting. Here are some tips.
1. Avoid posting several time a day
If you want someone to read your posts, I would say not to post more than three times in a day. This is because if people are looking at your blog in their news feed, they'll see three post within hours of each other and think, "I'll get to that one later" or worse, "I just read one of their posts". I know this is true because I've done it before.
2. If you're going to have a long post, get to the point and keep to the point
Long posts are fun to read, but not if they cover every topic in the world. Chances are if someone stumbles across your blog and sees nothing but words and words and words, they'll go to the next blog. But you can stop some of this by getting right to your point and not wandering. Make the title something interesting too, something that you would want to read. Above all, don't leave your post title-less.
3. Establish your identity
No one wants to be known as the blogger who only goes with the latest trends. I can think of a few bloggers who have a certain thing you can expect from them every time, but they give a different twist. Having an identity or a way people expect your blog to be can be helpful, but really annoying. You don't want to be known as the blogger who posts funny jokes and get a bad reaction when you post something really serious or personal. Mainly, just make sure you know who you want to be while blogging.
4. Try to avoid typos
Now, everyone is going to make mistakes and you can't catch every single typo, but it can be confusing and sloppy looking to have a billion typos and grammatical errors. Not to mention it's embarrassing to look back on.
5. Rambling posts are okay, but not everyday
You don't want every post to be like: "Today I went to the store with my mom, it's strange to notice all the different foods and what different people are buying. I was getting frozen pizza while across from me there was this guy who was getting wine. I wonder if people look like what they're buying. He definitely looked like a wine guy. That reminds me, I was watching TV when I got home and there was this really cool show and the criminal collected wine and he had a body in his wine cooler...ooh, that sounds like a good store. I'm writing a story with someone who's an insomniac, is anyone who follows this blog an insomniac? What do you do about it? Sometimes I can't sleep but I know that's different. It's funny because whenever I can't sleep I go downstairs and make myself something to eat, does anyone else do that?"
I think you can see where that post would go. She's asking so many questions that no one is going to answer them all. So I would say rambling posts are good, they can be organized to. Such as: "My Week Day by Day" and you could list what you did on different days, it leaves room to ramble but it's still organized. Or you could list things randomly, or have a "Let's see how much I can write in ten minutes" and write whatever you want.
So there are some blogging tips, I hope they've helped you can you can add some of your own if you want!
