A few Normal Days
Cally Gillon was 8. She was a pretty little girl she had brown curly hair and blue eyes her skin was neither dark nor light but in the middle she was neither skinny nor fat but average. Her mum was a fashion designer she owned “ CARA’S CLOTHING AND COLOR” it was the hot spot shop. All the girls at school wore her clothes and Cally got her clothes for free. Her dad was away a lot with his job right now he was in Italy. Cara, Cally’s mother was 26 she had had Cally when she was 18 her husband was 29. And daddy would be home his anniversary in June. And then her Mum and Daddy would go to London for the night, which, meant Cally got a sleepover. They would leave June 14 the day of their anniversary in the morning. Cally would eat brekfast with them and then head of to her dance class. The teacher gave her dance classes in exchange for all the costumes that were needed. Cally would take ballet then Jazz then Modern. After her best friend Laura’s mom would pick her up and drive both girls to the public pool for swimming lessons while she had her ladies book club. Then they would play in the pool eat their lunch play some more and go to Laura’s house. Where Cally would sleepover. Then at night Mum and Daddy would come back to pick her up those days were coming in three weeks, roughly.
“Cally wake up sleepy head!” Mum called from the stairway she was already down stairs where the kitchen and studio was and the shop.
“Coming Mum.” Cally called.
“I need you to see something I need help with this one dress it’s navy blue but I Don’t know which color the buttons should be”
“Alright, I’ll be right down” Cally said she shoved one her jeans and her coral colored tunic top. Then she hobbled down the stairs it felt like there were pins and needles in her feet ‘morning feet’ Daddy called them.
“ Okay do you like it?” Mum asked she held up a navy blue sailors dress that was toddlers size with no buttons.
“ Okay do you like it?” Mum asked she held up a navy blue sailors dress that was toddlers size with no buttons.
“ These buttons or these.” She held up white cloth buttons and gold buttons with the naval insignia.
“ The gold ones” Cally said shoving a piece of toast in the toaster. She poured herself a glass of iced tea.
“Ready for school honey?” Mum asked
“Yep I’m ready third grade get ready for me it the it’s the 231st day of school only 13 days to go 2 weeks 1 day and less then a month until school’s over.” Cally announced then she went off to school.
“Hi” Laura greeted
“Hi” Cally said nonchalantly
“Are you excited for the sleepover?” Laura asked.
“Yeah, but it’s a long time away”
After school Cally went up to her room to write in her diary:
Dear Diary,
Today is May 16th, Wednesday, school was fun today and Laura is excited for the sleepover. Mum is designing a new dress collection for the shop. There boys and girls summer clothes and she’s having a huge sale starting Friday until Sunday. All skirts 25% off all dresses 30%-75% off all accessories 10% of and all boys and men’s wear 25% off. I would be excited if I was Laura but sales don’t benefit me that much it doesn’t bring in as much money but Mum and Daddy don’t care at all they say we have enough money. But that doesn’t matter much. Queen Elizabeth has approved our fashions in the press, which makes our store more popular. Mum is very excited and the shop has gotten 1 more employee. Her name is Meredith but she goes by Eddy. For the MerEDith in her name I think it’s cool. She’s engaged to a man named Rick Peterson and she thinks Meredith Peterson is a nice name. I do to. Today we had a field trip to Stonehenge. It was sort of creepy going there to take a field trip. Usually it’s somewhere like a history or wildlife museum. I’m kind of glad this was a different type of field trip. Then after school Mum told me to write in my diary quickly because a lot of people were there and she needed my help we only have 3 employees me and mum. So goodbye! J
Once Cally finished writing her Mum called from the stairs. Cally rushed down to help. There were about fifteen adults and at least twenty children.
“Cally dear, could you attend to a customer!” Eddy shouted from where she was stacking shelves.
“Cally dear, could you attend to a customer!” Eddy shouted from where she was stacking shelves.
“Okay” Cally shouted back. She soon found a mother and daughter standing by the dresses.
“May I help you?” Cally asked
“Yes please” The Mother answered “This dress,” She said holding up a purple dress with gold trim and a gold sash
“You have of a smaller size in blue with a silver sash and trim but there is none of her size in the blue.”
“I’ll check back to see if there are any” Cally said. She went back to the storage room or supply room. Then Cally realized she forgot to take the girl size.
“What size?” Cally asked
“Small” The Mother answered. So Cally went to the back to find a small. There it was in blue. Cally picked it up and strolled back to the lady.
“ Thank you.” The lady said and left to the cashier, Gregg. Next Cally went to another side of the room found and teenage boy loitering in a corner.
“ Do you need something?” Cally asked
“I need a suit for the prom in 3 days.” He answered, embarrassed.
“Okay, what’s your size?”
He gave Cally his size and she produced a navy blue suit with an orange tie that was the color of the year.
“ Thanks” He smiled as either his sister or girlfriend came in. She needed a dress. It was a sunset faded color going from red to yellow with sequins everywhere, and earrings that were navy blue stars to match he brothers or boyfriends or something. Then soon the store closed for dinner at 7:00.
That was a bit of the first chapter of a book I was starting to write quite a while ago. Actually about two and half years ago. It's amazing how much things have changed since then. I've learned more about dialogue, punctuation, spelling, characters, plots, chapters, details and everything else. This is pretty terrible...and I didn't write it all that long ago.
Luckily I only got seven pages along in this book, but this is just to say that I'm not a great writer and I obviously wasn't. An important thing to remember is that you should always know that you can improve. Just like this. If you're at this point in your writing, well, you've improved from where you were two years ago and in two years you'll improve even more.
Your style will develop and you'll get a better vocabulary and you'll learn all sorts of things. Every page starts a new beginning.
